Sealed Deck Tournament Format Coming to Hearthstone

Magic: The Gathering players have long been familiar with its sealed deck tournament format, where instead of playing your own strategically created deck, players build new decks from six unopened booster packs at the start of the event.  This has always been a popular format due to the fact that 1) everyone loves a bit of randomness, 2) it requires skill to not just play, but to also construct a deck, and 3) it creates a level playing field as players create their decks from the same card pool instead of from their own collection.

Now, thanks to Red Bull eSports and Tempo Storm, the sealed deck tournament format is also coming to Hearthstone!  To kick things off, Red Bull eSports will be hosting a tournament where 4 of the top Hearthstone eSport teams will compete for a $3000 cash prize and a customized DXRacer gaming chair! (wait, say what?  How the hell is the team suppose to split that??).  The format is slightly different than M:TG as it will be a 3v3 team competition.

The participants in this tournament are as follows:

Team Archon:

Paul “Zalae” Nemeth
James “Firebat” Kostesich
Jason “Amaz” Chan

Team Liquid:

Janne “Savjz” Mikkonen
David “Dog” Caero
Jeffrey “Trump” Shih

Tempo Storm:

Haiyun “Eloise” Tang
Andrey “Reynad” Yanyuk
Johnnie “Ratsmah” Lee

Cloud 9:

Cong “StrifeCro” Shu
Rumay “Hafu” Wang
Andrew “TidesofTime” Biessener

One thing you may be wondering now is how the card draft is going to work, given that M:TG uses physical cards while Hearthstone is obviously digital.  The answer: the geniuses at Tempo Storm have actually built an online sealed deck generator tool so that EVERYONE can now play this format!  You can learn more about it and try it out here.

The tournament will be held at 12PM PST on Feb. 6th, and can be viewed live from the Red Bull Twitch Channel.  Planning to host a sealed deck tournament yourself in the future?  Be sure to let us know and we’ll be happy to help you promote it on our events page!
