Thoughts on the upcoming Clash Royale Balance Changes (11/30)

Editor’s Note: A small but noteworthy balance change will be dropping tomorrow! MoEsport contributing writer Cory is here once again to break down all the latest changes:

Mega Minion: Damage decreased by 6%, Hit Speed decreased to 1.4sec (from 1.3sec)

SC: As one of the most used cards at the top and in challenges, Mega Minion is clearly in need of some attention. It offers a lot of value on defense and fits into almost any deck, so we’re looking to reduce its damage output and make it a less obvious choice.

Cory: A much needed nerf for a card that has been truly powerful. The Mega Minion is extremely versatile, and this nerf should make it less effective. It will still one shot Archers at tournament standard, but it will take more hits to kill Hog Rider, Royal Giant, Balloon and Barbarians. The hit speed decrease isn’t significant, but should help turn the tides against the “Meta Minion”. Alternatives such as Mini P.E.K.K.A. and Lumberjack might be more enticing if this nerf is effective.

Elixir Collector: Production Speed increased to 8.5sec (from 9.8sec), Lifetime decreased to 70sec (from 80sec)

SC: Our last change took the Elixir Collector from a heavily overused card to a relatively underused one, so with this change we’re aiming for a middle ground! Increasing the Production Speed, but reducing the Lifetime, will give you a quicker return on your investment and make it a bit more rewarding to play – while still maintaining the risk aspect.

Cory: The recent nerf to the Elixir Collector turned the building from a must-have into a niche card. This “buff” should up the usage rates as the increase in production speed will make the building more effective. The cost will stay at 6, so playing Elixir Collector will still be relatively risky, but the payout will be quicker. Decks that already include Elixir Collector will obviously benefit from this..

Poison: Damage increased by 10%

SC: After removing the slow effect, Poison needs some more damage to compete with other spells – specifically Fireball – for a place in your deck.

Cory: This buff allows the Poison to destroy Musketeer and Wizard at tournament standards, something that Fireball can’t do. This should bring Poison usage rates up, and Fireball and Lightning usage rates down. Expect to see players using Poison instead of Lightning in decks that utilize the Lava Hound, as Musketeer and Wizard are common counters.

Tombstone: Spawn Speed decreased to 2.9sec (from 2.5sec)

SC: Tombstone is the most used building at the top, so we’d like to rein it in a little bit. Decreasing the Spawn Speed will result in a slower trickle of Skeletons and 2 less over its Lifetime.

Cory: This isn’t a big nerf, but they implemented it partly to stop Tombstone usage rates from getting out of hand, and to make other choices such as Cannon and Tesla more enticing.  However, 2 less skeletons in the lifetime of the building isn’t a big deal, so don’t expect tombstone usage rates to go down by much.

Lava Hound: Lava Pup Hitpoints decreased by 1%

SC: This is just to fix an inconsistent interaction with Crown Towers vs. Lava Pups at certain levels.

Cory: A minor fix to help level 12 Crown Towers two-shot level four Lava Pups.

Overall, the meta shouldn’t change much, but Poison and Elixir Collector should be the biggest shake-ups during this round of changes.
