Cloud9 wins, NA dominates at Vainglory Spring Championship

Cloud9 won its first major Vainglory accolade this past weekend as the team won Vainglory’s first Unified Western Live Championship.  Entering the tournament as NA’s second seed, the trio of of gabevizzle, iLoveJoseph, and Oldskool defeated heavyweights SK Gaming, Team SoloMid, and Gankstars en route to winning the championship.

A number of interesting storylines developed over the course of the 3-day championship.  While the European region (specifically Fnatic in London) played host to the tournament, it was once again the NA teams that dominated, with 3 NA teams advancing to the semifinals. G2 Esports, the #1 EU seed and only team from the region reaching the semis, were swept 3-0 by the underdog Gankstars team.  Meanwhile, Cloud9 was finally able to take down NA top seed and arch-rivals Team SoloMid 3-1 in the other semifinals match up.

The finals match-up between Cloud9 and Gankstars was an interesting one as Cloud9 captain gabevizzle was a long time player with Gankstars, and Oldskool was part of the the Gankstars Sirius team which had just finished 3rd at the World Championships in December.  But while the rivalry looked strong on paper, Cloud9 showed that they are currently in a different league in the Halcyon Fold, as they convincingly swept Gankstars 3-0 to win the Championship.

“The finals against Gankstars was intense as we were playing against our former teammates,” said gabevizzle. “We knew there was a good chance we were going to play as a top team and although we struggled at some points during the semifinals against TSM we stayed together to pull out a win during the finals. We’re already looking forward to the Summer Championships and competing with everyone again.”
