Super Evil Megacorp has made it known for a long time now that they are all in on mobile esports. Today, they are “doubling down” on their efforts as the Vainglory developers announced an additional $19 million in funding from their existing investors. The company has now raised a total of $63 million to date.
The additional funding will be put into use for developing Vainglory’s upcoming 5v5 game mode, as well as growing the game’s community. Interestingly, the official announcement mentions bringing “Vainglory and future games to even bigger audiences around the world”; could this mean that another title is already in development from SEMC?
On the esports side of things, it was also announced earlier this week in the Developer Update that the 2017 Vainglory World Championships will be held in Singapore! Southeast Asia has become a hotbed for mobile esports, and the Vainglory competitive scene has grown significantly in the region with the introduction of Vainglory 8 SEA along with Tesseract Challengers. As noted by PlayoffBeard below, Singapore has always been a special place for SEMC as Vainglory (then called Kindred) was first released into the country during its early beta phase. Given that this will be the first major international Vainglory competition in the region, we fully expect this year’s World Championship to be the biggest showcase for Vainglory esports yet!
