Cloud9 Champions again for the Vainglory Summer Season

After 3 days of intense competition between the Top 12 Vainglory teams in North America and Europe, the Cloud9 trio of Gabevizzle, iLoveJoseph and OldSkool are once again the winners of the NA & EU Unified Championships.  Having also won the Spring Unified Championships in London, the team has now secured a spot at the Vainglory World Championships in Singapore on December 14-17.

The weekend of intense live competition produced its share of storylines.  On the more predictable side, European teams once again failed to deliver, going 0-4 against their NA rivals during Day 2 of the competition.  Top Europe seed SK Gaming were swept by Immortals 3-0, while 2nd seed FNATIC lost to Nova Esports 3-1.  The only saving grace for Europe this weekend was Team Queso: competing in the special Challenger Cup, the Spanish team defeated Echo Fox for the only win from a European team during the entire weekend.

Despite falling short of winning the Finals, the Immortals team of DNZio, TTigers and Maxgreen was still arguably the most impressive of the competition.  Entering the tournament as NA’s #4 seed, Immortals had to first survive a tough Day 1 battle against longtime rivals (and DNZio & TTigers former team) Hollywood Hammers before moving on to face #1 Europe seed SK Gaming on Day 2.  The Immortals team made short work of SK Gaming with a 3-0 series sweep, setting up for a showdown with #1 NA seed and tournament favorites Team SoloMid in the semifinals.  The TSM/Immortals match-up ended up being the most closely contested battle of the tournament, but Immortals stepped up their play during the pivotal Game 5 to secure their spot in the Finals against Cloud9.

First time live championship participants Nova Esports also played exceptionally for their first time on the big stage.  After defeating Tempo Storm on Day 1, Nova would go on to upset FNATIC 3-1 on Day 2 before falling to eventual champions Cloud9 in the semi-finals.  The Top 4 finish for Nova Esports is especially impressive given that this is the first season that the organization has qualified for Vainglory 8.

With only a handful of spots remaining for the World Championships, we can’t wait to see who else will be joining Cloud 9 in Singapore!
