Hello! My friends at Starfi.re sent me the Battle Decks from players in the Global Top 200 at the end of last season. I analyzed the decks to produce lists of the most popular cards and decks at the top of the ladder. These lists may help you decide which cards to request from your clanmates, purchase with gold, and ultimately include in your deck.
NOTE: The recent balance update made a few changes that may affect the ranking of these cards. Specifically, Electro Wizard damage was reduced, Graveyard was reworked to be less “random,” Lightning has a radius of 3 (from 3.5), and Spear Goblins (including those in the gang) attack faster.
Zap discharges all tiny foes as the most popular card at the top of the ladder–included in over a half of all decks! Ice Spirit may sometimes get the job done cheaper, but it usually works better in defensive control decks than offensive beatdown ones. The popularity of these cards has suppressed the usage of Bats, whose descent has marked the rise of Goblins and the Goblin Gang. Their vulnerability to The Log keeps it at a respectable third place, just above the Ice Golem, another cheap distraction troop.
Cheapo cycle cards costing 1-3 elixir dominate the top of the usage list (as usual) but some more expensive cards have been on the rise recently. Electro Wizard was a top five troop last season and will likely remain one of the best support troops even after his damage nerf. Brave beatdown players continue to run Elixir Collector despite the rise in usage of Miner and Rocket which offer soft and hard counters, respectively. Bandit and Mega Knight are two legendary warriors whose synergy was broken slightly by a recent bugfix to their dashing mechanics, however they still remain reliable counterattackers.
Knight and Mega Minion remain the staple cards for shutting down small pushes. Their slower movement speed enables the buildup of light ground-based attacks from the Knight and larger, slower beatdown attacks with the Mega Minion providing air support. Hog Rider is the most popular card that functions solely as a win condition, making quick work of buildings in cycle decks and as the punisher behind P.E.K.K.A or Mega Knight in control decks.
The midrange damaging spells Fireball and Arrows have fallen from favor as their epic counterparts Poison and Tornado have seen an uptick in usage. Minions swoop in right below the Princess for their defensive, antiair capabilities but are upstaged by Minion Horde when it comes to going on the offense. Goblin Barrel sees virtually all of its play in the logbait deck but still comes in with an impressive top 20 finish.
Golem beatdown decks have increasingly relied on Night Witch to fend off other heavy, ground-based control decks. The Three Musketeers are just as popular in the world of beatdown and are seen in a variety of different archetypes outside of their classic decklist, reproduced below (often with Battle Ram). Inferno Tower struggles to burn through the many big targets marching toward it before Zap or Lightning resets its charge.
The bottom tier of viable decks starts with the Lava Hound and Balloon flying decks, which have sunk in usage behind ground-based strategies. Giant decks awkwardly run out of steam against heavier ground-based pushes and are too clunky to compete with quicker cycle decks. Mortar and X-Bow have stalled since their 0.5sec deploy time buff in the August balance update and teeter on the verge of irrelevance. Graveyard saw little use before the last balance change made it less “random,” but the jury is still out on whether the change made it less bad.
The new Flying Machine hasn’t really caught on yet.
